Dr. Coimbra is the Chief of the Department of Abdominal Surgery on Surgical Oncology, at a specialized cancer center in Brazil, AC Camargo Cancer Center, which is a leading institution on cancer treatment and research in Latin America. He received his medical school degree at Universidade Federal do Pará, UFPA, General Surgery training at Santa Casa de São Paulo, and fellowship in Surgical Oncology at AC Camargo Cancer Center. He then completed one more year of specialization on gastrointestinal oncology and his Master’s degree on Medical Sciences/ Oncology at Fundação Antônio Prudente.
Dr. Coimbra’s research interests include upper gastrointestinal cancer mainly stomach, primary liver tumors and metastasis, pancreas cancer, and biliary diseases. He is an enthusiast on combined cancer treatment, taking the benefits of each treatment options, which involves a careful surgical technique, minimal invasive therapies, and a multidisciplinary management. He is also responsible for the Tumor board discussion weekly leading a team of experts from several medical specialties. He is the director of a very active department on gastrointestinal oncology, one of the largest case series on HPB surgery in the country, and responsible for more them 15 fellows’ training in HPB and Surgical Oncology every year. Dr. Coimbra leads a multidisciplinary team that has developed the only Continuous Medical Education on Gastrointestinal Oncology in Brazil (PECOGI) since 2008, and is responsible for the organization of major local and International meetings on Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Coimbra belongs to several medical societies, such as the Society of Surgical Oncology (SBCO), Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA), IHPBA, International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology, Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões, ESSO,ABCG. Dr. Coimbra is the current President of the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology 2016-2017, Secretary of AHPBA, and serves on the editorial Board of Brazilian and international journals. He is the author of several book chapters, editor of a book on Upper GI and HPB Tumors and many peer reviewed publications on Surgical Oncology.
